The complex of temples, shrines, and buildings on the Phnom Penh riverfront survived the Khmer Rouge period, though it was badly damaged. Its rebuilding is one of the most significant stories of Cambodian cultural recovery. The Mekong River is visible from the grounds and the atmosphere is one of the most peaceful in the city.
Skuon Market — The Road Between Two Cities
The six-hour journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh passes through the Cambodian countryside — rice fields, sugar palms, and traditional wooden houses on stilts. The stop at Skuon Market is a genuine Cambodian experience: the market is famous throughout Southeast Asia for its fried tarantulas, a local delicacy eaten with salt, sugar and chilli. Even if you decline the tarantulas, the market itself — the produce stalls, the noise, the energy — is worth the stop.

4 Day Siem Reap & Phnom Penh Tour Package from Malaysia
A 4-day tour combining Siem Reap and Phnom Penh is the most efficient way to see both sides of Cambodia: the ancient Khmer Empire that built Angkor, and the modern Cambodian capital on the Mekong. Four days is tight but very manageable — Day 2 for the full Angkor circuit, Day 3 for the transfer south and the Mekong cruise, Day 4 for Phnom Penh's highlights before departure.
The tourist express bus between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh takes approximately 6 hours and passes through the heart of the Cambodian countryside — a journey worth doing for what you see out the window. For those with limited time, a domestic flight (40 minutes) can replace the bus journey on request.
The Mekong River Cruise: What to Expect
The Mekong River cruise departs from the Sisowath Quay riverfront in central Phnom Penh, where the esplanade is lined with restaurants and bars that become particularly atmospheric at sunset. The boats head south on the Mekong past Diamond Island (a government-developed recreation area in the middle of the river), Koh Dach (Silk Island, visible in the distance), and a series of fishing villages and stilted river communities.
The cruise typically lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours. The Tonle Sap river confluence — where the Tonle Sap meets the Mekong in one of Southeast Asia's most significant river junctions — is visible from the boat. Most guests describe the returning leg, heading north toward Phnom Penh as the city lights come on, as the most beautiful part of the cruise.
Phnom Penh: Beyond the Main Sites
Most Phnom Penh itineraries focus on the Royal Palace and Toul Sleng. This package adds a morning discovery of the city's French-colonial heritage: the Central Market (Psar Thmei), one of Asia's finest art deco market buildings completed in 1937 with its distinctive central dome and four wings; Wat Phnom, the hilltop temple where the city was founded in the 14th century; and the Independence Monument, built in 1958 to mark independence from France and modelled on the towers of Angkor Wat.
