Sri Lanka Fits
Everything Into a Small Island.
Ancient cities and sacred temples in the morning, mist-wrapped tea hills in the afternoon, and leopards in the national park at dusk. Sri Lanka is compact enough to do it all, and rich enough that you will never feel like you have.

Small Island, Impossible Variety
Most visitors are surprised by how much fits into one island. Ancient ruins, mountain trains, wildlife safaris, colonial beaches, and some of the best tea on earth, all within a few hours of each other.

Kandy: The Last Royal Capital
Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural heartbeat, a UNESCO World Heritage city cradled in misty hills around a lake. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic draws pilgrims from across the Buddhist world. In the evenings, traditional Kandyan dancers and drummers perform a show that has been running for centuries.

Nuwara Eliya: Little England in the Clouds
At 1,868 metres above sea level, Nuwara Eliya is refreshingly cool and draped in tea estates that roll over every hillside. Colonial bungalows, rose gardens, and the rack railway through the Ella Gap make this the most cinematic corner of the island.

Sigiriya: The Rock Fortress in the Sky
Rising 200 metres from the jungle floor, Sigiriya is one of the most dramatic archaeological sites in Asia. A 5th-century king built his palace on top, with frescoes, mirror walls and water gardens that survive today. The climb rewards you with a view that stretches to the horizon in every direction.

Yala: Leopards and Elephants at Close Range
Yala National Park has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. Jeep safaris at dawn or dusk regularly turn up herds of elephants, crocodiles on the riverbanks, and peacocks stepping through the scrub. The south coast beaches are minutes away from the park gate.
Where to Go and Why
Sri Lanka is small enough to combine destinations in a single trip. Each place has a completely different character.

Kandy
IconicThe last royal capital of the ancient kings, set around a sacred lake with the Temple of the Tooth Relic at its heart. The cultural heartbeat of Sri Lanka.

Nuwara Eliya
ScenicCool mountain air at 1,900 metres, endless tea estates and the scenic railway between Kandy and Ella. Sri Lanka's Little England.

Colombo
UrbanA layered capital of Dutch colonial quarters, Buddhist temples, spice bazaars and a waterfront promenade on the Indian Ocean. Every Sri Lanka trip begins here.

Yala National Park
WildThe world's highest density of wild leopards. Dawn jeep safaris through the scrub forest regularly turn up elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles.

Jaffna
AuthenticThe Tamil heartland of Sri Lanka's north — Dutch Fort, Nallur Kovil and the sacred Nainativu Island. A culture closer to Tamil Nadu than Colombo.
Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka from Malaysia
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that affect different coasts, so the right time depends on where you plan to go.
West & South Coast Season
Best for Most VisitorsNovember to April
Dry and sunny on the west and south coasts, and in the Cultural Triangle. This is the prime window for Colombo, Kandy, Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya and Yala. Ideal for first-timers.
East Coast & Hill Country
East Coast & NorthMay to September
The east coast and Jaffna are dry from May through September while the west gets its monsoon. The hill country and Kandy are fine year-round with afternoon showers.
How Many Days Do You Actually Need?
One Region
Enough for Kandy and Colombo, or a focused cultural triangle escape. Good if you have visited before and want to go deeper in one area.
Sweet Spot
The right amount of time to combine culture, hill country and either the south coast or wildlife. Most first-timers do best with a week.
Full Circuit
Enough to cover north and south, from Jaffna to Yala, with time in the hills and the Cultural Triangle. The full island experience.
