This package is for travellers who want to go beyond the standard Angkor circuit. Most Cambodia tours begin and end in Siem Reap with the temples. This one adds the experience that most visitors never discover: Phnom Kulen — the sacred mountain where the Khmer Empire was founded in AD 802, and one of the most remarkable natural and historical sites in Southeast Asia.
Day 2 covers the full Angkor Archaeological Park circuit: Angkor Wat at sunrise, the walled city of Angkor Thom with its 200-faced Bayon, Ta Prohm with its tree roots splitting ancient stone, and Pre Rup for the classic sunset. Everything the temples have to offer, unrushed.
Day 3 takes you north of Siem Reap to Phnom Kulen National Park. This is the mountain where King Jayavarman II declared independence from the Javanese kingdom and established the Khmer Empire. The River of a Thousand Lingas flows through the park — a stretch of river where the sandstone bed is carved with over 1,000 lingams (representations of Shiva) and depictions of Vishnu and Brahma, submerged beneath shallow rushing water. A reclining Buddha carved from a single sandstone boulder sits at the mountain summit. Two waterfalls drop into swimming holes in the jungle. And almost no foreign tourists ever come here.

Phnom Kulen — Birthplace of the Khmer Empire
In AD 802, King Jayavarman II climbed this mountain and performed a ceremony that declared the Khmer kingdom's independence and established himself as the first universal monarch — the event that historians mark as the birth of the Khmer Empire that built Angkor. Phnom Kulen (Mountain of the Lychees) is now a national park revered as the most sacred mountain in Cambodia. Most visitors to Siem Reap never make it here.
River of a Thousand Lingas — Carvings Beneath the Water
The Kbal Spean river flows over a sandstone riverbed that has been carved with more than 1,000 lingams (sacred representations of Shiva) along with depictions of Vishnu reclining on the cosmic serpent, Brahma, and various mythological figures. The carvings lie beneath a few centimetres of clear rushing water, catching the light in a scene that feels genuinely sacred. These were carved in the 11th century to purify the water flowing down to fertilise the Angkor rice plains below.
Angkor Wat & The Full Temple Circuit
The world's largest religious monument covered properly in a full unrushed day. Banteay Srei — The Women's Temple
One of Angkor's finest temples and one most tour groups skip. Banteay Srei was built in the 10th century in pink sandstone and is covered in the most intricate bas-relief carving in the entire Angkor complex — so detailed and fine that it was attributed to women (hence the name). The carvings of celestial dancers, mythological scenes, and decorative panels are remarkably well-preserved. Nearby Preah Dak village demonstrates traditional palm sugar production.

4 Day Siem Reap & Phnom Kulen Tour Package from Malaysia
This package is for travellers who want to understand Cambodia beyond the famous monuments. Phnom Kulen is the most sacred mountain in Cambodia and the site where the Khmer Empire was born — yet it appears on very few tour itineraries because it requires a full day's commitment, an early start, and a guide who knows the park.
The combination of the Angkor temple circuit on Day 2 and Phnom Kulen on Day 3 gives you two completely different Cambodias: the stone-carved monuments of a medieval empire at the height of its power, and the sacred natural landscape where that empire began. Together they are more meaningful than either experience alone.
Phnom Kulen National Park: What to Know Before You Go
Phnom Kulen is a 48-kilometre drive from Siem Reap, taking approximately 1.5 hours on roads that become rougher near the park entrance. The park is open from 8am and has a daily visitor limit — early arrival is essential, particularly during peak season. The main sites are accessible on foot via jungle trails.
The River of a Thousand Lingas (Kbal Spean) requires a 30-minute walk each way through dense jungle. Comfortable shoes with good grip are essential. The waterfalls at Phnom Kulen are fed by seasonal rainfall and are most impressive between August and November. The reclining Buddha at the summit is accessible by a wide stepped path and requires about 20 minutes from the car park. Dress modestly — this is an active sacred site.
Banteay Srei: The Temple Most Tour Groups Skip
Banteay Srei lies 25 kilometres northeast of Siem Reap in the same direction as Phnom Kulen, making it a natural addition to the Day 3 itinerary. Built in 967 AD in pink sandstone and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, Banteay Srei is smaller than the main Angkor temples but contains some of the finest stone carving anywhere in the Angkor complex. The intricate decorative panels, ceiling carvings, and pediments are far more detailed than anything at Angkor Wat itself. The name means 'Citadel of Women' and refers to the belief that only women with supernatural skill could have created such delicate work.
