4 Days Sacred Laos. Golden Temples, a High-Speed Train & Turquoise Waterfalls.

Arrive at Wattay International Airport, Vientiane, and transfer to hotel. Afternoon guided city tour covering the four most important sites in Laos's capital: Wat Si Saket — the oldest surviving wat in Vientiane (1818), with a cloister of 6,840 miniature Buddha images lining the surrounding walls and shelves, and one of the few temples to survive the Siamese sacking of 1828; Haw Phra Kaew — the former royal chapel built in 1565 to house the Emerald Buddha, now a museum of Lao Buddhist art housing lacquered thrones, gilded screens, and 18th-century religious objects; Patuxai Victory Monument — Laos's Arc de Triomphe, built in 1968 using American-donated cement meant for the construction of an airport (the interior is decorated with traditional Buddhist and Hindu motifs instead of French classical designs); and Pha That Luang — the great golden stupa that appears on the Lao national seal and national currency, surrounded by a golden cloister containing 30 smaller stupas. Each stupa represents a tenet of Buddhist law. The full compound is most dramatic in late afternoon light. Evening at leisure along Vientiane's riverside promenade.

Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to Vientiane railway station for the 08:00 high-speed train to Luang Prabang — two hours through karst gorges, river valleys, and a series of tunnels that total over 200 kilometres of the route. Arrive Luang Prabang around 10:00. Hotel check-in and guided exploration of the UNESCO-listed old town: Royal Palace Museum — the former royal residence of the Kingdom of Laos, built in 1904 during the French colonial period and converted to a museum in 1975 after the abolition of the monarchy. The museum houses the sacred Phra Bang Buddha image (which gives the city its name), the royal throne room with its French furniture and Lao murals, and gifts from foreign heads of state including one from President Nixon. Wat Xieng Thong — built in 1560 and never destroyed, the finest example of Luang Prabang temple architecture. The sweeping multi-tiered roof descends to ground level in a form seen nowhere else in Laos. The rear wall mosaic of the Tree of Life in coloured glass is Luang Prabang's most celebrated artwork. Wat Mai — a royal monastery with a five-tiered roof and gold-leaf relief facade depicting scenes from the last incarnation of the Buddha before his enlightenment. Evening: climb 328 steps to the summit of Mount Phousi for Luang Prabang's most famous sunset — the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers visible on both sides of the old town peninsula, the old colonial buildings catching the evening light below. Descend through the night market stalls beginning to open along the main street. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Breakfast and early departure for Kuang Si Waterfall (29 km south of Luang Prabang, approximately 40 minutes by road). The falls are best visited before 10:00 when the pools are empty and the light filters through the jungle canopy. Three tiers of travertine cascades drop through dense forest into a series of natural pools in an extraordinary shade of turquoise-blue. Swim in the lower pools — the water is cool year-round. At the base of the falls, visit the Free the Bears sanctuary, a rehabilitation centre for Asiatic black bears rescued from wildlife traffickers across Laos and neighbouring countries. Return to Luang Prabang via Ban Xang Khong — a riverside village 3 kilometres east of the old town where families have practised traditional mulberry-bark paper-making and silk weaving on hand looms for generations. The village roadside stalls sell handmade notebooks, greeting cards, silk scarves, and handwoven fabrics directly from the makers. Afternoon free in Luang Prabang for the old town, riverside cafés, or temple exploration before the evening train. High-speed train from Luang Prabang to Vientiane (18:00, approximately 2 hours). Arrive Vientiane station approximately 20:00, transfer to hotel. Overnight in Vientiane.

Breakfast at hotel. Morning at leisure. Talat Sao (Morning Market) — Vientiane's main covered market, busiest from 06:00 to 09:00, with stalls selling fresh produce, local coffee beans, Lao textiles, silverwork, Buddhist amulets, and handicrafts. Alternatively, walk along the Mekong riverfront promenade (Fa Ngum Road) for coffee and a final view of the river as it flows towards the Thai border, 20 kilometres downstream. Transfer to Wattay International Airport for your onward journey home.
