Hanoi, Sapa & Fansipan — 5 Days

5 Days in North Vietnam. Ancient Hanoi, Sapa's Terraced Highlands & Vietnam's Highest Peak.

Two completely different Vietnams in five days. Ancient Hanoi: thousand-year-old streets, egg coffee, and Cha Ca grilled fish. Then Sapa — the highland plateau where the Hoang Lien Son range rises to 3,147 metres and H'Mong communities have farmed impossibly steep terraced slopes for two centuries. And above it all: Fansipan, the Roof of Indochina, reached by the world's longest three-rope cable car from Sapa town.

About This Package

5 Days North Vietnam: Hanoi, Sapa & Fansipan

This five-day itinerary covers the two faces of North Vietnam that most travellers want to experience: Hanoi's ancient urban culture and the highland landscape of Sapa — then adds Fansipan, Vietnam's highest peak at 3,147 metres, reached by the Sun World cable car system from Sapa town. It is the most focused North Vietnam highland package, with two nights in Sapa giving genuine time to explore the mountain landscape.

The drive from Hanoi to Sapa (06:30 AM pickup, 320 km, approximately 5.5 hours via the Lao Cai expressway) is the standard and most efficient route — a comfortable private van journey through the Red River Delta farmland and into the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, arriving in time for lunch and an afternoon at Cat Cat Village. The expressway has reduced the Hanoi-Sapa drive significantly from the pre-highway era.

The Fansipan experience on day three is the package's centrepiece: the Muong Hoa Hiking Train from Sun Plaza Station in Sapa town to the cable car boarding station, the gondola ascent to 3,143 metres, the funicular to the peak, and the 11 Buddhist spiritual sites that have been built into the mountain's upper slopes — including the 21.5-metre Great Buddha (50 tons of copper) and the 12-metre Guan Yin statue (18 tons). The full Fansipan combo (train + cable + funicular + all entrance fees + buffet lunch) is included.

What Makes This Trip

Why This 5-Day Hanoi–Sapa Package Stands Apart

Fansipan peak cable car Great Buddha Sapa North Vietnam

Fansipan — Roof of Indochina by Cable Car

At 3,147 metres, Fansipan is the highest peak in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia combined — the Roof of Indochina. The Sun World Fansipan Legend system from Sapa town includes the Muong Hoa Hiking Train (a mountain rack railway from Sun Plaza to the cable car boarding station) and the gondola cable car (6,282 metres total, the world's longest three-rope cable car) to the summit at 3,143 metres. The full Fansipan combo (train + cable + funicular + 11 Buddhist sites + Great Buddha + Guan Yin + buffet lunch) is included in the package price.

Cat Cat Village Black H'Mong Sapa North Vietnam rice terraces

Cat Cat Village — Black H'Mong Culture

Cat Cat Village is the closest Black H'Mong community to Sapa town — a 30-minute walk downhill from the town centre through rice paddy terraces, past water buffaloes grazing on steep slopes, to a waterfall and village where the H'Mong community has lived for generations. Women at the village entrance sell hand-dyed indigo fabrics and silver accessories made by traditional techniques. The Rainbow Slide — a downhill slide track through the village — is optional at own expense (approximately RM10). The view from the terraces above Cat Cat extends across the full Muong Hoa Valley.

Sapa Muong Hoa Valley terraced rice paddies highland Vietnam

Sapa Highland Landscape

The Muong Hoa Valley below Sapa town contains some of the most photographed terraced landscapes in Asia — rice paddies carved into near-vertical slopes by H'Mong, Red Dao, Tay, and Giay communities over two centuries. Sapa town itself sits at 1,500 metres elevation in a natural amphitheatre, with the Hoang Lien Son range rising behind it. The morning mist that fills the valley before 09:00 and the cloud that wraps the higher ridges in the afternoon are the defining atmospheric qualities of the highland landscape. The terraces are most spectacular September–October (golden harvest) and May–June (water-filled reflection season).

Hanoi city tour Hoan Kiem Lake Old Quarter Vietnam

Hanoi City Tour — 1,000 Years of History

Hanoi's essential imperial and cultural sights cover a thousand years of Vietnamese history: Tran Quoc Pagoda (6th-century Buddhist pagoda, the oldest in Hanoi), the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum on Ba Dinh Square (where Ho Chi Minh declared independence in 1945), Hoan Kiem Lake (the Returned Sword Lake), the Hanoi Opera House (1901 French Beaux Arts), and the 36-guild Old Quarter — each street named for the trade it once hosted exclusively. The Cha Ca dinner introduces Hanoi's most distinctive dish: turmeric-marinated fish cooked at the table with fresh dill.

5 Day Hanoi Sapa Fansipan Tour from Malaysia

The 5-day Hanoi, Sapa, and Fansipan tour is the most focused North Vietnam highland itinerary for Malaysian travellers. Two nights in Sapa allows both the Cat Cat Village walk and the full Fansipan Sun World cable car experience without rushing. The drive from Hanoi to Sapa via the Lao Cai expressway is approximately 5.5 hours by private vehicle — comfortable and efficient, with the highland scenery beginning after the first 3 hours of expressway.

Fansipan at 3,147 metres is the highest peak in Indochina — higher than anything in Malaysia, Thailand, or Cambodia. The Sun World Fansipan Legend complex, including the 6,282-metre three-rope cable car (the world's longest), makes the summit accessible to all travellers regardless of fitness level. The Great Buddha statue (21.5 metres, 50 tons of copper) and the Guan Yin statue (12 metres, 18 tons) at the summit are as impressive as the mountain views.
