The drive itself is spectacular, ascending through terraced vegetable farms, misty mountain passes, and highland villages before arriving at the plateau at 2,000 metres above sea level. The plateau's flat highland fields are scattered with the oldest surviving Hindu temples in Java — the Arjuna Temple Complex (a cluster of five temples dating from the 7th century CE) predates both Borobudur and Prambanan by over a century. Explore also the Dwarawati and Gatotkaca temples before walking to the Sikidang Crater, an active volcanic caldera whose sulphurous fumaroles and steaming mud pools bubble at the surface of the crater floor — you can walk remarkably close to the active vents. The highlight for many visitors is Telaga Warna (Colour Lake), whose waters shift between turquoise, green, yellow and golden depending on the sulphur mineral concentration and the angle of light — the lakeside boardwalk at midday often reveals the most vivid colours.
