The outer walls of the Shiva temple (47 metres tall) are carved with over 1,000 panels illustrating the Ramayana epic — your guide will highlight the key scenes. As the afternoon light softens, continue 4 km southeast to Candi Ijo, the highest situated temple complex in the Yogyakarta region at 410 metres above sea level. The 11-platform terraced complex commands an extraordinary panoramic view: Prambanan to the east, the volcanoes to the north, the Indian Ocean glinting to the south. Rise early for a hearty hotel breakfast before setting off for Borobudur, a 1.5-hour drive northwest. The world's largest Buddhist temple rewards an unhurried visit — your guide will lead you through the ascending narrative reliefs: the base reliefs illustrating karma and rebirth, the middle terraces depicting Buddha's past lives (Jataka tales), and finally the open circular terraces with their 72 latticed bell-shaped stupas and 360-degree views across the Kedu Plain and five surrounding volcanoes. After lunch near the temple, return to Yogyakarta city for the afternoon's cultural immersion. The Kraton Yogyakarta — a walled city-within-a-city — is the official residence of the 10th Sultan of Yogyakarta and the living repository of Javanese court culture. Stroll through open pavilions (pendopo) displaying royal gamelan sets, royal regalia and Javanese shadow puppets, while court dancers may be rehearsing in a shaded corner. A short walk away, the extraordinary Taman Sari Water Castle (1758) reveals its hidden world: ornate bathing pools where royal concubines once bathed, an underground mosque carved into volcanic stone, and labyrinthine alleyways where batik artists work. Continue to Kotagede for a glimpse of Yogyakarta's finest silverwork tradition before returning for dinner.

Dedicate Day 3 to the layers of Yogyakarta's urban heritage. Begin at the Sonobudoyo Museum, which houses one of Java's finest collections of Javanese cultural artefacts — from ancient Hindu-Buddhist bronzes and wayang puppet sets to Batik Solo and traditional Javanese jewellery. Across the street stands Fort Vredeburg, the Dutch colonial fortress built in 1760 to 'protect' (in reality, to watch over) the neighbouring Kraton. Today it houses a vivid diorama museum chronicling Indonesian independence from the colonial era through to the 1949 revolution. Walk to the nearby Beringharjo Market — Yogyakarta's great covered traditional market — where three floors of stalls sell fresh produce, Javanese spices, traditional jamu herbal medicines, batik fabric by the metre, vintage clothing and street food. After lunch, drive south to Kasongan pottery village where generations of Javanese families have practised terracotta craft since the 17th century. Watch master potters at the wheel, explore the outdoor display gardens crowded with terracotta sculptures and pots, and try your own hand at throwing clay. Return via Malioboro Street for a final evening of shopping for batik shirts, wayang puppets, silver jewellery and Javanese leather goods before dinner.

Use the free time to revisit any favourite spots, pick up last-minute souvenirs at Malioboro Street or the Progo market, take a batik lesson at one of the Taman Sari community workshops, or simply savour a final cup of Java coffee at a riverside café along Jalan Code.
