Stop at a leather craft centre and continue to Pandai Sikek village, renowned for its intricate traditional Songket weaving where craftspeople produce elaborate textiles using silver and gold thread. Arrive in Bukittinggi, the cool highland city at 930 metres above sea level, for dinner and overnight rest.

An early start for the highlight of the tour — Harau Valley. Drive through rice paddies and rubber plantations to reach this extraordinary natural amphitheatre where 150-metre vertical granite cliffs rise dramatically from the valley floor, scattered with waterfalls and framed by rainforest. Return to Bukittinggi for lunch before exploring the city's iconic sights: Taman Panorama Baru viewpoint offers spectacular views into the green depths of Sianok Canyon, one of Sumatra's most dramatic gorges. The colonial-era Jam Gadang clock tower — gifted by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands in 1926 — dominates the hilltop square and is Bukittinggi's most photographed landmark. Browse Pasar Atas local market for spices, Minang snacks, and traditional textiles before a hearty dinner and overnight.

Today's journey takes you through the cultural heartland of the Minangkabau people. Stop first at Ummi Aufa Hakim to sample and purchase famous Sumatera cassava chips and beautifully patterned batik. Pause at Panorama Tabek Patah viewpoint for sweeping mountain vistas before arriving at Istana Pagaruyung — the grand royal palace of the Minangkabau kingdom, rebuilt in its original style after a 2007 fire, featuring the iconic tiered curved rooflines known as rumah gadang. Just a short drive away, Kampung Pariangan sits on the slopes of Mount Marapi and is considered one of Indonesia's oldest and most beautiful traditional villages — rows of ancient Minang houses overlook terraced paddy fields in an unforgettable scene. Travel to Padang via the modern Sicincin toll road for dinner and overnight in the city.

A morning city tour of Padang — Indonesia's most famous culinary city and capital of West Sumatra — before your departure flight. Drive past Padang Beach and the historic Old Town with its Dutch colonial architecture and Old Harbour waterfront. View the elegant Siti Nurbaya Bridge, named after a famous Minang literary character, which crosses the Batang Arau river to the old Chinese quarter. Head to Air Manis Beach on the city's southern headland to see Batu Malin Kundang — the legendary rock formation said to be a cursed disrespectful son, turned to stone by his mother's prayer, and one of Padang's most visited folk heritage sites. Transfer to Minangkabau Airport for departure.
