Tirta Empul: Bali's Most Sacred Purification Temple
Founded in 926 AD according to Balinese inscriptions, Tirta Empul's holy spring has been a site of ritual purification for Balinese Hindus for over a thousand years. The spring emerges in a large rectangular pool divided into separate purification spouts, each believed to have different healing properties. Even if you don't participate in the ritual bathing, the temple complex — with its ornate split gates, moss-covered shrines and devotional offerings — is among the most atmospheric sacred sites in all of Southeast Asia.
