Sri Lanka's weather runs on two separate monsoon systems depending which coast you're focused on, and this trips up a fair number of first-time visitors who don't realise it going in.

December through March is generally the sweet spot for the south and west coasts, Yala and the beaches around Mirissa included, so if you're doing the classic wildlife plus beach combo, this window's your safest bet. May through September actually works better for the east coast if that's somewhere in your plans, though most first timers stick with the south and west anyway since that's where the bulk of the highlights sit. April, and again October into November, count as transition months, still workable most of the time but with noticeably more rain than the peak windows either side.
