Your Lake Toba and Medan trip begins at KLIA. Several airlines fly daily from KL to Medan's Kualanamu airport, and the flight takes roughly an hour. Malaysians enter Indonesia visa-free for short tourist stays, though it is always worth confirming current rules before departure. From the airport, a private vehicle or tour coach takes you south towards Parapat, the lakeside town that serves as the gateway to Lake Toba.

The drive typically takes four to five hours depending on traffic and stops. Many tours break the journey at Pematang Siantar or a roadside viewpoint, and the scenery changes from plantations to hill country as you climb.

Parapat sits on the eastern shore of Lake Toba and has hotels ranging from simple guesthouses to lakeside resorts. From here, ferries and chartered boats cross to Samosir Island, the large island in the middle of the lake that is the heart of Batak culture.

The crossing takes under an hour and is a highlight in itself, with green hills dropping into deep blue water. Most tours visit Tomok village to see the ancient stone tombs of the Batak kings and Ambarita for the stone chairs where village councils once met. Local guides explain the customs and there is usually a performance of traditional dance.

The Batak people have lived around Lake Toba for centuries and are known for their boat shaped houses with steep roofs, their music and their strong sense of community. Handicrafts such as woven ulos cloth, wood carvings and small calendars carved on bamboo make good souvenirs.

Batak cuisine is often pork based, so Malaysian Muslim travellers should ask their guide to arrange halal meals. Medan itself has a large Muslim population and halal food is easy to find, including Medan's famous soto, mee rebus and durian.

The following outline shows how a comfortable four day, three night trip works for most Malaysian travellers.

Day 1: Arrive Medan

Fly from Kuala Lumpur to Medan Kualanamu airport in the morning. Transfer to your hotel in Medan city. In the afternoon, visit Maimun Palace, the Great Mosque of Medan and the nearby Tjong A Fie Mansion. Dinner in Medan, with plenty of halal options in the city centre. Overnight in Medan.

Day 2: Travel to Lake Toba and Settle In

After breakfast, depart by road towards Parapat, approximately four to five hours with a lunch stop along the way. Arrive at Lake Toba in the early afternoon. Check in to your lakeside hotel in Parapat or, if preferred, take the short ferry to Samosir Island and stay on the island itself. Watch the sunset over the lake. Overnight at Parapat or Samosir.

Day 3: Explore the Lake and Samosir Island

Take the boat across to Samosir Island if you are not already there. Visit Tomok village for the ancient Batak royal tombs, then continue to Ambarita for the stone seat complex. Browse local craft stalls for ulos weaving and wood carvings. Return to Parapat for a final evening by the water. Overnight at Parapat.

Day 4: Return to Medan and Depart

Drive back towards Medan. Stop at the Sipiso-piso waterfall near Berastagi and the highland fruit market if time allows, with views of Mount Sinabung on a clear day. Continue to Medan, arriving in time for a final lunch before transferring to the airport for your afternoon or evening flight back to Kuala Lumpur.

Bring a light jacket because Lake Toba and Berastagi are cooler than lowland Medan, especially at night. Carry some Indonesian rupiah for small purchases and tips, as card acceptance outside hotels is limited. Roads are winding, so anyone prone to motion sickness should sit at the front of the vehicle.

The dry season from roughly May to September offers the clearest views for a Lake Toba and Medan trip, though the region is pleasant year round. Weekends and Malaysian school holidays are busy in Parapat, so book hotels early.
